Beware of this Culture creeping into our Society thru the back door………Must see….parents and kids

I would sincerely request the leaders of our community, scholars, teachers and parents to spend some

time and hear this program….(find the link below)

This reflects the true image of our society, we are answerable if we do not take any action now….

Do not get distracted with the Urdu language, inshallah someone will translate this into English and upload…..

Nowadays our scholars find it a taboo in speaking against certain subjects like “facebook”, “mixed gatherings”, “movies” etc…

Many of our English scholars do not deliberate, guide or focus on such important topics which are the ultimate cause of our destruction…

what is the reason??? do they feel they will be left out in the society or branded as orthodox, extremists, old-fashioned & hardliners ?….

Few scholars who do speak openly on such issue, our appreciation to them for having the guts and being so daring and audacious…

Let us face the facts and speak out about something which is destroying our society , rather than remain silent to achieve popularity or admiration……

it is incumbent on all of us to come out and speak openly, like this Urdu speaker did…………..

Save your children…….MUST WATCH……..

There are many Atraf Ziyarats around Medina.  The main ones are :

  1. OHAD – The place where the 2nd War of Islam took place.  In this war Imam Ali was given the sword Zulfiqar.  H.Hamza (uncle of the Holy Prophet) was killed in this war.  Important to do the Ziyarat of H.Hamza (as per Hadith of the Holy Prophet, if one does not do Ziyarat of my uncle Hamza, then I will not accept his Ziyarat).

  1. BADR – The place where the 1st War of Islam took place.  One can just pass by the place.

  1. Masjide Qiblatain – The mosque where during Zohr Namaz (in Ruku of 2nd Rakat) the Holy Prophet got the revelation to change Qiblah by 180 degrees from M.Aqsa (in North) to Kaaba (in South).  Only Holy Prophet and Imam Ali turned immediately to the new Qiblah.

Masjide Rad-ush-Shams – the place where the Sun reversed on signal of the Holy Prophet to allow him to recite his Zohrain Namaz.  Some say this is also Masjide Fadheekh where the miracle happened whereby people who were drinking alcohol repented and buried their drinks and in a short time it converted to Vinegar.  This mosque has been demolished.

Departure from Medina to Meeqat to Mecca :

Depending on climatic conditions plan your departure from Medina to Mecca. Also keep in mind that on arrival in Mecca you have lot of Wajib Actions to perform and it is convenient to do them asap.  Bear in mind some Mujtahids (including A.Seestani) allow men in Ehram to travel under mobile cover at Night time (with some conditions).

NOTE :

  1. 1.     Men who are not circumcised are NOT ALLOWED to enter Masjidul Haram, Mecca.
  2. 2.     In Umra (as well as in Hajj) it is Sunnat to speak and pronounce the Niyyat for each act.

Recommendations + Sunnat Acts + Wearing Ehram :

  1. About 12 – 14 hours before have a proper shower (using soaps, shampoos, etc.).

  1. About 1 – 2 hours before departure do a Ghusl with
  • PLAIN WATER             –       No scented soaps, shampoos, conditioners, etc.
  • MULTIPLE NIYYAT       –       (a) For wearing Ehram of Umra e Mufrada.

(for  Ghusl)                  (b) For entering Haram area.

(c) For entering Mecca city.

(d) For entering Masjidul Haram.

(e)  For doing Tawaaf of Kaaba.

  1. After Ghusl (in Medina) put on Ehram Clothes – (DO NOT DO NIYYAT OF EHRAM).

For men the clothes of Ehram are 2 pieces of unstitched clothes.  For women it can be her normal clothes but it is recommended to be plain white and cotton fabric.  However, women are not allowed to wear silk clothes or cover their face and hands (upto wrists).

  1. Depart Medina for Meeqat – Masjide Shajarah (nowadays called Masjide Dhul Hulaifah. It also used to be called Masjide Abyar Ali).

  1. In Masjide Shajarah go inside as much as possible near the Mehrab (original mosque area) then
  • Pray 2 Rakat Sunnat Namaz for Hadiya-e-Masjid.
  • Pray 2 Rakat Sunnat Namaz for Wearing Ehram of Umra-e-Mufrada.

  1. Ehram of Umra-e-Mufrada.  Entering in the State of Ehram involves following 3 Vital Acts which should be performed simultaneously :

v WEAR Ehram – Loosen and tighten your Ehram (that you had worn from Medina).

v NIYYAT of Ehram – Either for self or on behalf of 1 person or many people.

NOTE :       (1) SAME NIYYAT to be done for all 6 Acts of Umra in Mecca.

             (2) If one was doing an Umra-e-Mufrada which was wajib due to Nadhr,                        Ahd or Qasam then ONE NIYYAT ONLY in line with wajibat.                               Only for a purely Sunnat Umra-e-Mufrada one can do a Multiple Niyyat.

v Recite TALBIYYAH – Correctly pronounce in Arabic – “LABBAIK, ALLAHUMMA LABBAIK,  LABBAIK  LAA-SHARIKA  LAKA LABBAIK, INNAL HAMDA  WANNE’AMATE  LAKA WALMULK, LAA-SHARIKA LAKA  LABBAIK”.

NOTES :

(a)  The first part of the Talbiyyah (that is underlined) is WAJIB.  This contains the 4 Labbaik. The additional part is recommended.

(b)  Many things become Haram (see list below) when a person becomes MUHRIM (in the state of EHRAM).  After completion of all Wajib acts the person becomes MUHIL as things become Halal.  The white Ehram clothes and the Haram things reminds one of Death and the Kafan (Shroud) and Waking up from the grave and going to account for our deeds.

(c)   Ehram clothes must be Mubah (not Ghasbi) and completely Paak (even little Najasat like blood that is accepted in Namaz is NOT ALLOWED in Ehram).

(d)  Talbiyyah can be recited several times and may be continued. Talbiyyah must be stopped before boundary of Mecca.

(e)  For men the clothes of Ehram must be 2 Unstitched white clothes – 1 for wearing as Lungi and 1 over BOTH Shoulders (Note : Other sects cover 1 shoulder only).

(f)   For women the Ehram can be stitched but cannot be of pure silk.

  1. Depart from Meeqat to Mecca.

NOTE : Agha Seestani and several other Mujtahids allow MUHRIM  MEN to travel under mobile cover only at Night provided it is ‘Normal Climatic Conditions’ (if no rain, storm, etc).

  1. Arrive Mecca and check-in hotel.  One is allowed to rest for some time or go washroom or take shower or do Ghusl (take care of Haram acts – no soap, no mirror, no combing hair, etc).  When one is ready to go to Masjidul Haram first do Wudhoo.  Then proceed slowly towards the Holy Mosque and it is recommended to enter from Baab-us-Salaam (this is between Safa and Marwa. However with the new renovations it is not clearly marked).

UMRA-E-MUFRADA

Umra-e-Mufrada is a SUNNAT (recommended) act which can be performed any time during the year (except during Hajj season).  However, when one goes from Umra-e-Mufrada, then after putting on the Ehram at Miqaat all subsequent actions become WAJIB and MUST BE PERFORMED WITH WAJIB NIYYAT.

Following 7 things are wajib in Umra-e-Mufrada :

  1. 1.     Wear EHRAM (see rules below) for Umra-e-Mufrada at MIQAAT (specific entry points – see below).  After wearing Ehram a person becomes MUHRIM and 25 things (see above) are Haram.

  1. 2.      Perform TAWAAF (see rules below) of the Holy Kaaba for Umra-e-Mufrada.

  1. 3.     Pray 2 rakaat NAMAZ (see rules below) for Tawaaf of Umra-e-Mufrada behind Makame-Ebrahim.

  1. 4.     Do SAEE (walk) between As-Safaa and Al-Marwah 7 times for Umra-e-Mufrada.

NOTE : Each direction counted as 1.  Start at Safaa, end at Marwah.  (See rules below).

  1. 5.     Do TAQSEER (that is, cut little nail or hair) for Umra-e-Mufrada (see rules below).

  1. 6.     Perform TAWAAF-UN-NISAA for Umra-e-Mufrada (see rules below)

  1. 7.     Pray 2 rakaat NAMAZ for TAWAAF-UN-NISAA of Umra-e-Mufrada behind Makame-Ebrahim

NOTE : After doing first 5 acts one has a following choice for performing the remaining 2 acts :

(A) Perform them immediately (while still in Ehram)

(B)  Have a break of few hours or even few days (but without leaving Mecca) and may change from Ehram into Normal Clothes and then perform the 2 actions.

NOTE : As long as all 7 actions are not done the Umra-e-Mufrada is not complete.  For those who choose option (B) should note that most of things that were Haram now become Halal except Nos. 1, 2, 15 and 21 – 25.  Even after Umra Mufrada, act nos. 1, 2, 15, 22 and 23 remain Haram.

After finishing Umra-e-Mufrada one can go to Masjidul-Haraam in normal clothes for any ibadat or sunnat tawaaf.  Most of the 25 things that are Haram (see list above) in the state of Ehram become Halal (except the first 2 which always remain Haram in Mecca whether one is in Ehram or not) after completing all 7 acts.

Niyyat for Ehram: “I am wearing Ehram for Umra-e-Mufrada QURBATAN  ILALLAAH”.

Note : If a non-baligh child does this Niyyat then it becomes WAJIB on him also too to perform all acts.  Hence for a non-baligh child it is recommended that he DOES NOT DO ANY Niyyat (he may or may not wear Ehram like clothes and go with his parents to Mecca and do all acts without Niyyat).

After wearing Ehram the Niyyat for all other actions is : “I am doing _ _(name of action) _ _ for Umra-e-Mufrada WAJIB QURBATAN  ILALLAAH”.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS :

MIQAAT   –   There are 5 points of Miqaat (specified points of entry) :

TAWAAF   –   During Tawaaf following rules MUST be adhered to :

(1)  Tawaaf must start from HAJARE-ASWAD and also end there.  To be sure                               of this rule one must make the Niyyat of Tawaaf slightly before H.Aswad (Niyyat                               must be exactly same as the one at the time of wearing Ehram).  Tawaaf must                               end slightly after Hajare Aswad – passing it completely in the last round.

(6)  Each Tawaaf consists of 7 rounds of Kaaba (that is 7 rounds = 1 Tawaaf).

(7)  Tawaaf must be performed within the radius of Kaaba to Maqame Ibrahim                                (13 meters).  Most Mujtahids allow going outside this radius in case of crowds.

  1. 1.  HAJARE  ASWAD                            2. DOOR OF KAABA
  2. 3.  MIZAAB AL RAHMAH                      4. SHAZARWAN
  3. 5.  HIJRE ISMAIL                              6. HATEEM
  4. 7.  MAQAME IBRAHIM
  5. 8.  RUKN  HAJARE ASWAD (SHARQI)

10. RUKNE SHAAMI (GHARBI)

11. RUKNE IRAQI (SHUMALI)

NAMAZ OF TAWAAF   –             After completing the Tawaaf one must proceed BEHIND MAQAME                                                 IBRAHIM to recite 2 Rakat Namaz of Tawaaf.  Rules for Namaz are :

(1)  Position yourself as close to Maqame Ibrahim as possible.

(2)  Make Niyyat of Namaz of Tawaaf of Umra-e-Mufrada (Niyyat must be exactly                    same as the one at the time of wearing Ehram).

(3)  Pray 2 Rakat Namaz (like Fajr Namaz).

SAEE   –             This is the walking between the mounts of Safa and Marwa 7 times.

NOTE : Safa is directly in line with Hajare Aswad (notice Green light and board indicating “MASAA”).  Rules for Saee are :

(1)  Saee must start from Safa.

(2)  Make Niyyat of Saee of Umra-e-Mufrada (Niyyat must be exactly same as the                    one at the time of wearing Ehram).

(3)  Each direction is counted as 1.  Hence one will start at Safa but end at Marwa.

(4)  One should not look or turn backwards during Saee.

(5)  Wudhoo is recommended during Saee.

(6)  For Men, it is recommended to do HARWALA (jog) between the pillars marked                   with Green Light.

TAQSEER  –            After completing the Saee one Must do TAQSEER (cut some hair and/or nails).                                      Rules for Taqseer are :

(2)  Cut little bit or YOUR OWN hair and/or nail.

NOTE : ONLY AFTER ONE HAS DONE TAQSEER then he can help others to do it.

(3)  It is not a Must to do the Taqseer at Marwa.  However, it is convenient and many                           people do it there.

On Completion of these 4 acts (Tawaaf, Namaz, Saee and Taqseer) one MAY remove Ehram as he/she has passed the 1st stage of becoming MUHIL (things become HALAL).  Most of things that were Haram now become Halal except Nos. 1, 2, 15 and 21 to 25.

IMPORTANT NOTE : One still has 2 Wajib Acts to perform (Tawaaf-un-Nisaa and its Namaz).  The rules for these are exactly the same as Tawaaf and Namaz discussed before, except the respective NIYYAT will have to be done for each act.  Also these 2 acts must be done together (one after the other – without any gaps).  One has full choice on the timing of performing these 2 acts.  He/She can either :

(1)  Perform these immediately after Taqseer.

(2)  Go back to hotel and change into normal clothes and then perform them after some hours or even after a day or two.  However, one cannot go OUT OF MECCA without performing them.

NOTE : Even after full Umra Mufrada is completed, act nos. 1, 2, 15, 22 and 23 remain Haram.

ADDITIONAL  UMRA-E-MUFRADA :

After one has completed 1 full Umra-e-Mufrada (all 7 acts) and for the days he/she is in Mecca, one can do additional Umra-e-Mufrada under following conditions :

  1. 1.     The Niyyat of the additional Umra-e-Mufrada MUST BE DIFFERENT to the one(s) already done.  This is because for any particular Niyyat ONLY ONE Umra-e-Mufrada can be done in ONE ISLAMIC MONTH.

SUNNAT  TAWAAF :

While in Mecca it is recommended to perform as many SUNNAT  TAWAAF as possible.

In a Sunnat Tawaaf one can do MULTIPLE NIYYAT and then perform 1 Tawaaf (7 rounds) followed by Namaz-e-Tawaaf.

If one wants to do several Sunnat Tawaaf please note that after EVERY TAWAAF (7 rounds) one must pray Namaz first then do another Tawaaf with its Namaz.  One should not do multiple Tawaafs together followed by multiple Namaz.

HAZRAT SULEMAN AS & THE OCEAN DEPTH DOOM:

Taking with him a group of jinn and people, Hadhrat Sulaiman (alyhis salaam) went to the sea. When he arrived at the seashore, he looked to the right, left and in all directions but did not see anything wonderful. Everything appeared normal. He then instructed an Ifreet to dive into the ocean, investigate and report back. (Ifreet is a designation for powerful and evil jinns. Such jinns were under the control of Nabi Sulaiman—alayhis salaam).

The Ifreet dived into the ocean. After a while he emerged and said: “O Nabi of Allah! Inspite of going down as far as I could, I did not reach the bottom nor did I see anything extraordinary.”

Sulaiman instructed another Ifreet to dive into the sea and report back with his findings. After some time he emerged and also stated his inability of discovering anything inspite of having gone down twice the depth of the first Ifreet.

Sulaiman (alayhi salaam) then instructed Aasif Bin Barkhiya who was a powerful and a pious jinn, to enter the sea. Aasif Bin Barkhya was the Prime Minister of Hadhrat Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) and he is mentioned in the Qur’aan Majeed. In an exceptionally short period of time, Aasif emerged from the ocean with a white-domed building, which had four doors. The doors were of a variety of precious stones. Inspite of all four doors being open, there was not a drop of water inside the structure. Although the domed building was right at the bottom of the ocean at a depth, which both Ifreets could not reach, it was completely dry. When Hadhrat Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) looked inside, he was amazed to see an extremely handsome young man donning beautiful garments, engaged in Salaat. Hadhrat Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) entered and greeted the man. He asked the man:

“What delivered you into the depths of the ocean? The man narrated his story as follows:

“O Nabi of Allah! My father was lame in his legs and my mother was blind. I served them for seventy years. When my mother was about to die, she made the following dua: “O Allah! Increase the age of my son and grant him the taufeeq to spend his life in your ibaadat.” When my father was about to die, he made dua as follows: “O Allah! Take Your service from him in such a place to which no shaitaan can have access.”

After burying my father I was walking along this seashore when I saw this domed structure. Its beauty enticed me inside. Immediately an angel arrived and delivered the building into the depths of the ocean.”

Hadhrat Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) asked: “In what age did you come here?” the man replied: “During the age of Nabi Ibraahim Khalilullaah.” When he calculated the years. Nabi Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) determined it to be 2000 years. Inspite of this long period, the man was young, handsome and there was not a strand of whiteness in his hair. Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) asked: “What do you eat in this ocean?” the man replied: “O Nabi Allah! Daily a green bird comes with something the size of a man’s head I eat of it and taste in it the deliciousness of all things on earth. My hunger and thirst are satisfied by eating of it. Heat, cold, drowsiness, tiredness, fear, etc., all are eliminated by eating of it. Hadhrat Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) said: “Do you wish to accompany us or be returned to your place?”

The man said: “Return me to my place.”
Hadhrat Sulaiman (alaylis salaam) ordered Aasif Bin Barkhiya to return the man with the domed structure to his place at the bottom of the ocean. Thus, was he returned to his abode. Turning to the gathering, Hadhrat Sulaiman (alayhis salaam) said:

“Look! How Allah has accepted the prayers of parents. May Allah have mercy on you. You refrain from fulfilling the rights of your parents. O Allah! Grant us the taufeeq to serve our parents.”

Ayatollah SHAHID Morteza Motahari

An Amazing Personality
Martyred on 1st May, 1979

Ayatullah Motahari in the Words of Imam Khomeini

Shahid Motahari was an outstanding philosopher, a Jurist (mujtahid), a preacher, a writer, a university lecturer and ultimately a Shaheed.  He also played a key role in the movement which brought the Islamic Republic of Iran into being and was in contact with Imam Khomeini throughout the years of his exile in Iraq.
A cursory examination of the 22-volume Sahifeh-ye Imam—the largest ever compiled anthology of Imam Khomeini’s speeches, messages, interviews, religious decrees, permissions, and letters—reveals that the martyred Ayatullah Professor Murtada Motahari undoubtedly occupies a distinct station in the sight of the Great Leader of the Islamic Revolution and the Idol-Breaker of the 20th Century.

Imam Khomeini’s communications with Ayatullah Motahari in the forms of religious permissions and personal letters, as well as descriptions of him in letters, speeches, messages, statements, interviews, autobiography, and memorial note during and after his lifetime as indicated in the encyclopaedic authentic reference source suggest that the former considers the latter a trustworthy representative, compassionate teacher, erudite scholar, competent jurist, eloquent speaker, combatant ‘alim, and an epitome of martyrdom in the way of truth and freedom of thought.

These benevolent views on him are consistent from the first volume of the anthology in which Professor Motahari is indicated having been granted authority [ijazah] on Dhu’l-Hijjah 24, 1388 AHS (March 13, 1969) by the Imam in the financial and religious law affairs up to the 21st volume (volume 22 being the indexes of the whole voluminous treatise) wherein he—in the Imam’s message dated Shahrivar 14, 1367 AHS (September 5, 1988) addressed to the Muslim nation of Pakistan and the ‘ulama’ of Islam on the occasion of the martyrdom of Sayyid ‘Arif Husayn Husayni—is mentioned as among “the freedom-loving ‘ulama’ of the Islamic world subjected to conspiracy and terrorism”.
For the Imam, Shahid Motahari is more than a student, representative, associate, confidant, friend, or son. Indeed, it can be said that for him, Motahari cannot be confined to a single dimension as he is an embodiment of a totality. Motahari is Motahari.
After the Revolution, the Imam issued a message to the Iranian nation on March 17, 1980,
recommending the youth to read the books of Prof. Martyr Motahari.
The full text of the message reads:
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Although the Islamic Revolution of Iran has attained victory in spite of the ill-wishers and adventure-seeking elements, it was the will and pleasure of God.
Organizations, Islamic and revolutionary, have come into being one after another.
All this within a year, and in calm and with success.
At the same time, great many losses—irreparable or irretrievable—hailed on our nation and on our academic and Islamic institutions
at the hands of hypocrites and anti-revolutionaries.
Similarly the assassination of the scholar and specialist in Islam,
His Eminence Hujjat al-Islam Hajj Shaykh Murtada Motahari, may God have mercy on him.
I cannot express my feelings and sentiments at this moment of sensation with regards to this dear one.
The thing that I can tell about him is that he rendered much valuable services to Islam and learning.
It a matter of sorrow that the traitors’ hand has uprooted this fruit yielding tree from the institutes of leaning and Islam.
They deprived all from the valuable fruits of the late professor.
Motahari was a dear son to me and a strong backing to the religious and academic institutions.
He was a useful servant to the nation and the country. May God bestow upon him mercy and host him along with the great servants of Islam.
Now it is being heard that the anti-Islamic and anti-revolutionary groups are canvassing propaganda (anti-Islamic)
to keep our youth from reading the books of this professor.
I recommend the students and the class of open-minded ones to not let the books of this scholar to be neglected.

I wish success to all from God. Peace be upon the virtuous servants of God.

The fruits of Remembrance of Allah(swt) :

Let us see what are the fruits of  the ‘zikr’ of Allah(swt) .

Allah(swt) says in the Holy Quran in Surah Al-Ra’d Surah 13 Verse 28

Those who believe and whose hearts are set at rest in the remembrance of Allah; for surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest ! (15:28)

When a believer is faced with any fears or worldly problems,  it is the ‘zikr’ of Allah(swt) which produces dramatic effects in him and sets him free from all worldly worries. It is the ‘zikr’ of Allah(swt) that sets hearts at rest.   The more people seek God the more they turn to Him, the greater is their peace of mind.  _____________________________________________________

Allah rewards those who do ‘zikr’

Allah(swt) says that if my servant is engaged in doing my zikr all the time and puts my remembrance above  his needs, I will reward him and fulfill his needs and legitimate desires without him expressing his ‘haajaat’ and wishes.

_______________________________________________________

Allah(swt) also promises success to those who do ‘zikr’

In Surah Al-Anfaal (8:45) Allah(swt) says,

وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

‘’and remember Allah much that you may be successful.’’

________________________________________________________

Also, the fruits of ‘zikr are promises of peace, happiness, mercy, forgiveness and great rewards in this life and the next.

Allah(swt) says in Surah Al-Ahzaab (33:35)

وَالذَّاكِرِينَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا

“Those men and women who engage much in Allah’s praise,  for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and great reward”.

________________________________________________________

A person who engages himself in the Zikr of Allah(swt) restrains and safeguards himself from indecency and wrong- doing and from the temptation of Shaytan since while he is engaged in the ‘zikr’ of Allah(swt)he would be in a state of full awareness of his duties and obligations in observing the laws of Allah(swt).

_____________________________________________________

Let us see in the words of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq(a.s.) about what a person stands to gain and what transformation occurs within himself when he develops intense love of Allah(swt) through ‘zikr’.

The Imam said,

(Hubbu-l-llahi izaa adhaa-a ‘alaa ‘abdin)

When the love of Allah(swt) shines over a person

(Akhlaahu ‘an kulli shaaghil)

‘’It will keep him away from every other engagements.’’

(wal muhibbu akhlasu-n-naasi sirran lillah)

‘’and in his private life he becomes the most dedicated and serious in his relationship with Allah(swt).

(wa asdaquhum qawlan almuhibbu lillah)

‘’and out of  his love for Allah(swt) his utterances will be truthful.’’

 (wa awfaahum ‘ahdan)

‘’and he will be keeping his promises.’’ i.e. he will be fulfilling the covenant of Allah(swt) and the people.

(wa askaahum ‘amalan)

‘’and he will be the most purified in deeds’’.

(wa asfaahum zikran)

‘’and when he remembers Allah, his ‘zikr’ is the most beautiful and sincere.’’

(wa a’abaduhum nafsan)

”and when it comes to serving Allah(swt) in all matters  he looks at it as a privilege and treats it with pleasure.

(tatabaaha bihil malaaikatu ‘inda munajatih)

”and when he does the ‘munajaat’ of Allah(swt) the angels proclaim that this servant is talking to Allah(swt).

(wa taftahiru bihi biru’yatihi)

‘’and when they see his face, the angels feel proud.’’

One of the reasons we are here for Salaatul Jumu’a is because of the zikr of Allah(swt).  Allah(swt) says in Suratul Jumu’a (62:9)

‘’fas’aw ilaa zikrillahi wa zarul bay’) i.e. ‘’Hasten to the ‘zikr’ remembrance of Allah(swt) and leave off trade at this hour.’’  According to the ‘ulama’ business transacted during Salatul Jumu’a has no ‘barakah’, no blessings. This is the time when one should be occupied in the worship of Allah(swt) only.

Muraaqabah :

One of the most important requirements for spiritual travelling which has been very much emphasised by all spiritual masters is ‘Muraqabah’.

”Muraaqabah” is a form of ‘zikr’ which involves turning one’s heart towards Allah through meditation and deep focus. It is the sufi word for meditation. Literally, it means ”to watch over”, ”to take care of”.  It implies that with meditation, a person watches over or takes care of his spiritual heart(or soul).  According to Allamah Sayyid Muhammad Husain Tabatabai, in his book ‘Risala-yi Lubb al-Lubab’, a Shia Approach to Sufism, Muraqabah means that the traveller must be attentive and alert under all circumstances so that he would not fail to observe his duties or stray from what he is assigned to do.  He also says that its meaning varies according to difference in station and the status of the traveller.

At an early stages of wayfaring ‘muraqabah’ also means avoiding useless activities and keeping away from anything that is of no benefit to one’s religion  and refraining from words and deeds that are in conflict with God’s will and His pleasure.  Muraqabah is the foundation upon which meditation(fikr) and invocation(zikr) of Allah(swt)is constructed. As long as ‘Muraqabah’ is not undertaken, ‘zikr’ will remain ineffective.

 ‘Zikr’ from the heart :

As against the ‘zikr’ of the tongue, that is, just merely chanting the ‘zikr’ by the tongue, what is more effective and beneficial is the ‘zikr’ of the heart.   This means that the heart must always remain conscious of Almighty and surrender completely to the will of Allah(swt).

In Surah Al-A’raaf ( 7:205) Allah(swt) says,

وَاذْكُرْ رَبَّكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ تَضَرُّعًا وَخِيفَةً

‘’Remember your Lord in your heart with humility and fear and reverence’’

وَدُونَ الْجَهْرِ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ وَلَا تَكُنْ مِنَ الْغَافِلِينَ {205}

‘’And without being loud in words  in the morning and evening’’.

وَلَا تَكُنْ مِنَ الْغَافِلِينَ

‘’And do not be of those who are heedless and neglectful’’.

________________________________________________________

رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): خيرُ الذِّكرِ الخَفِيُّ.

The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘The best remembrance is the silent type.’[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 1771]

________________________________________________________

What are the obstacles which prevent the remembrance of Allah(swt) ?

Let us see what the Qur’an says about factors which prevent a person from the Remembrance of Allah(swt). In Surah Al-Munafiqoon (63:9) Allah(swt) says,

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ {9}

‘’O You who believe ! let not your wealth, or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah; and whoever does so it is they who are the losers. ’’

Here Allah(swt) reminds His servants not to be distracted or excessively preoccupied with their wealth and children forgetting their duties and obligations to Allah(swt) and His servants.

Also, anything that distracts a person from the remembrance of Allah(swt) like submitting to base desires or being intoxicated with power, all act as a barrier in the performance of good deeds and this in turn  causes one to forget Allah(swt).

_______________________________________________________

Heedlessness(Ghafla):

The opposite of  ‘zikr’ is ‘ghafla’,  heedlessness which contributes to neglecting and forgetting the ‘zikr’ of Allah(swt).  ‘Ghafla’  This heedlessness is as a result of obsession and attachment to this ‘dunya’ .  The heart which is heedless in the remembrance of Allah(swt) is  a dead heart because it is disconnected with the original source of spiritual energy, that is, Allah(swt).

Imam Ali(a.s.) said,

(wa man ghalabat ‘alayhil ghaflah, maata qalbuhu)

‘’That person’s heart is dead which is overpowered  by heedlessness and forgetfulness of Allah(swt).’’

______________________________________________________

The consequences of disregarding the remembrance of Allah:

Let us see what the Qur’an says about the consequences of being blind and neglectful in the remembrance of Allah.

Allah(swt) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:19)

وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ نَسُوا اللَّهَ فَأَنْسَاهُمْ أَنْفُسَهُمْ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ

‘’And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget their own souls ! such are the transgressors, the evil doers. ‘’

Forgetting Allah  inevitably leads to forgetting one’s true self.  When a person forgets that he is a servant of Allah(swt), he becomes neglectful in serving Him and instead serves many others whose servant he is not.

________________________________________________________

In another Surah Al-Zukhruf (43:36) Allah(swt) says,

وَمَنْ يَعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ {36}

‘’And whoever is blind and turns away from the remembrance of the Beneficent Allah, We appoint for him a Devil, so he becomes his close companion.’’

Such a person falls victim to the snares of Shaitan, becomes his intimate companion and consequently, comes to grief. ________________________________________________________

Allah(swt) says in Surah Ta-Ha (20:124-126)

And whoever turns away from My remembrance, his shall be a straitened narrow life, and we shall raise him up blind on the Day of Judgement.

Blindness in the Hereafter is far worse than physical blindness in this transient world.

قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرْتَنِي أَعْمَىٰ وَقَدْ كُنْتُ بَصِيرًا

He shall say : My Lord ! why have You raised me up blind when I could see before ?

قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ أَتَتْكَ آيَاتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا ۖ وَكَذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَىٰ {126}

‘’He will say: So it shall be.  Our revelations came to you but you disregarded them ; so will you, in like manner,  be disregarded this day.’’

Allah(swt) warns here about the consequences of rejecting His message of guidance.   These are ‘ma’ishatan dhanka’a difficult straitened life in this world  and ‘a’maa’ a blindness that will persist in the Hereafter.

___________________ ‘ma’ishah’, human life does not just depend upon physical requirements for its sustenance, welfare and happiness but there are other factors which contribute to his wellbeing.   These are social, moral and spiritual development.  Those who reject  Divine teachings remain deprived of these things and thus lead a difficult life, a life full of strains and stresses.  Such people normally do not find peace and happiness in their lives.  Somebody may be a millionaire, and yet you will find that his life is plagued by discontentment and restlessness.  People whose so-called success was brought about by resorting to illicit and evil means suffer intense unhappiness and mental agony.  Such people always remain in conflict with their conscience and everything around them deprives them of true happiness and peace.

________________________________________________________

We therefore conclude that man who was endowed with intellect and sight in this world for trial, misused his physical sight and intellect and made himself blind for the next eternal life.   He was deliberately blind to Allah’s injunctions and lead a sinful and depraved life as a result of which he deprived himself of the Grace of Allah(swt).
